Railex to Expand Nursery Stock for 2008
Railex ventured into the “hands on” nursery industry with the goal to increase labor efficiencies as well as maintain the integrity of the product while shipping cross country to final destination customers.
Railex in conjunction with the Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN), got the message to the many nursery growers in the Pacific Northwest. Growers/shippers became aware of Railex due to an OAN featured article in Digger, a nursery trade magazine published by Oregon Association of Nurseries.
In addition Railex services were called upon with a couple grower/shippers who had already begun initial phases of product unitization to increase efficiencies. Railex tested different varieties of nursery stock for custom unitization loading by experienced personnel.
Plants are unitized then loaded on trailers and brought to the Railex Wallula state of the art trans-load center where they are loaded on refrigerated fresh air exchange rail cars. Plants are transported cross-county with a guaranteed 5 day transit and loaded onto waiting trucks for delivery, same day delivery in most cases.
Final Destination customer’s satisfaction continued to grow with condition and quality of nursery stock and arrival times as each week passed.
Final destination customers noticed immediate improvements in order accuracy due to RF tracking, improved product condition, avoiding manual unload while increasing speed and cleanliness at costumers dock, as well as providing damage free deliveries and improved transportation time keeping photosynthesis to a minimum.
Increasing labor efficiencies, order accuracy, product quality, condition, and overall customer satisfaction provides opportunity and expansion for Railex and nursery stock shippers, a win-win situation for all.
In the Inaugural year of shipping nursery stock to the Northeast, Railex delivered over two-hundred loads of nursery stock to customers in the east. Railex plans to expand the nursery stock category while the industry moves toward a “foot print” of unitization.
